How to use this test
Start the camera
Select Start camera and allow the browser permission prompt. Device names may appear only after permission is granted.
Check the preview
Look for a live image and choose another available camera if your browser offers a selector.
Read the reported settings
Use the displayed width, height, aspect ratio and requested frame-rate setting as a description of this stream.
Stop when you are finished
Select Stop camera before leaving if you no longer need the preview.
What we check
After a deliberate start, the page asks the browser for a video stream and displays it in a local video element. A visible preview shows that this browser received frames from the selected camera during this session.
The page can show properties the browser exposes for the active track, such as its delivered width, height, aspect ratio and frame-rate setting. These are reported stream settings, not laboratory measurements of actual frame delivery or camera performance.
A mirror control changes only the way the local preview is drawn. It does not establish how another application, meeting service or recipient will display your video. Stop ends the stream tracks used by this page.
What this test can’t tell you
A live preview cannot prove focus, colour accuracy, low-light quality, physical camera health, or whether a video-call app will use the same camera successfully.
The tool needs HTTPS, browser camera support and your permission. It cannot bypass an operating-system privacy setting, workplace policy, or another program holding the camera.
Something not working?
The permission prompt never appears
Check the address bar for a saved camera block, then reload after changing that site permission. Some browsers show no new prompt when a previous choice is stored.
The preview is black or frozen
Choose another camera if available, close camera apps and browser tabs, then stop and start again. A privacy shutter or laptop camera switch can also block the image.
No camera is listed
Reconnect an external camera, try a different USB port, and confirm that the operating system recognises it. Managed devices may restrict camera use.
It works here but not in a call
Choose the same camera in the call app’s device settings and check that app’s permission. This preview cannot configure Zoom, Teams, Meet, or another app.
Common questions
Does this test record video?
No. It shows a local browser preview after you start it. The preview is not saved or uploaded by this test.
Why is my camera name missing?
Browsers often hide device labels before permission to reduce fingerprinting. Start the camera, allow access, and check the selector again.
Why is the image mirrored?
Mirroring can make a front-facing preview feel natural. It changes this preview only; check your call application to learn what other people see.
Can this tell me whether my camera is good enough?
It can show that this browser received a stream and report its settings. Lighting, bandwidth, call-app processing and your intended use still determine the result elsewhere.
