How to use this test
Start the microphone
Select Start microphone and allow permission when asked. Speak normally or make a short sound near the microphone.
Watch the level
Look for movement in the meter while you speak. Try the device selector if more than one microphone is available.
Make a short recording
If your browser supports recording, choose Record 15-second sample, then play the short local clip back to check the captured signal.
Stop the input
Use Stop microphone when finished so this page releases its audio stream.
What we check
With your permission, the page receives an audio stream and analyses its samples in the browser. Movement in the meter means the page is receiving changing audio values from that stream during the test.
The displayed level is a relative digital measure, commonly expressed in dBFS or a similar scale. It helps compare quieter and louder moments in this session, but it is not calibrated sound pressure, room noise, or a statement about how loud you are in decibels.
Recording begins only when you choose Record 15-second sample. The clip stays in this browser for local playback and is removed when you stop or reset the test. Playback checks the captured signal through the current output; it does not reproduce a remote call.
What this test can’t tell you
Input activity does not assess voice clarity, microphone quality, echo cancellation, noise suppression, room acoustics, or how a meeting service will process your sound.
The test cannot identify a physical microphone fault or override system settings. Recording and device selection vary across browsers and may be unavailable.
Something not working?
The meter does not move
Confirm permission, speak close to the intended microphone, and choose it in the device selector. Check the system input level and mute control as well.
The wrong microphone is active
Choose the desired device after permission, then stop and start the test. Bluetooth headsets and webcams often expose separate microphone entries.
Permission was denied
Open the browser’s site permissions from the address bar, allow the microphone, and reload. On managed devices, an administrator may control access.
Recording or playback is unavailable
Your browser may not support the recording format used by the page, or audio output may be muted. The live meter can still show whether input reaches the browser.
Common questions
What does a moving meter prove?
It shows this page received changing audio samples from the selected stream. It does not prove that another app, person, or service will hear you clearly.
Is the dB value a sound-level measurement?
No. A relative dBFS-style display refers to digital signal level and has no fixed relationship to sound pressure in your room.
Does the test upload my recording?
No. The microphone stream and any recording stay in this browser. A recording is created only when you choose to make one, then removed when you stop or reset the test.
Why does my headset microphone sound quiet?
Check the selected input, system gain, headset mute switch and Bluetooth profile. A low local level can help identify where to look, but it cannot diagnose the headset.
